Going to the theatre is utter joy for little people and it doesn't always have to be expensive if you plan ahead.
Watch out for special offers throughout the year. During Kids Week, a child aged 16 or under can go to any participating London show for free where tickets are available as long as they’re accompanied by a full paying adult. Booking using opens in June for a limited period.
The South Bank Centre also runs the Imagine Children’s Festival in February where they run a variety of activities and theatre performances aimed at kids and for families on a budget.
And for mums and dads that are worried that their little ones will cause a scene, fear not. Children’s shows are full of other young children and no-one really minds the old cry or shriek! Plus you will be amazed how mesmerised your little ones will be by the whole experience. I think the theatre was the first time my then 2 year old sat silent for a whole 45 minutes!
Here are some other theatres in Surrey and SW London that have shows suitable for children and are worth checking out.
New Wimbledon Theatre, Wimbledon SW19
Mainly shows adult theatre but has shows for kids throughout the year and often gets show pre / post West End runs.
Orange Tree Theatre, Richmond, Surrey
A fabulously tiny theatre which performs plays ‘in the round’. The audience are split across the stage level or on a mezzanine floor and only go back 2-3 rows so you can be sure of a good view. Located close to Richmond train station this little theatre is perfect for children and little legs. Most of the performances are aimed at an adult audience but around holiday times they usually have some shows that are suitable for youngsters.
Polka Theatre, Wimbledon SW19
The ultimate theatre for children and conveniently located on Wimbledon Broadway. There is also a nice little cafe and activities for kids so worth popping by even if you aren’t seeing a show. Note that the Polka Theatre is temporarily closed for redevelopment and is due to re-open in 2020.
Richmond Theatre, Richmond, Surrey
Similar to New Wimbledon Theatre and brings to life kids favourites such as Ben & Holly. Also a good choice for the annual Christmas panto usually with some celebrity names.
Rose Theatre, Kingston, Surrey
A lovely little theatre located close to the river in Kingston showing lots of family favourites such as The Gruffalo, Zog and Tabby McTat. Plenty of parking nearby and a great coffee shop to grab a drink before or after the show. There are also lots of children toys to play with to keep even the youngest ones happy. The rake of the theatre is quite gradual so make sure you ask for a (free) booster seat at the cloakroom before the show starts if you are with really young children.
